After receiving a root canal procedure, it is likely that you will have some tenderness for a few days.
In order to minimise any discomfort, try and avoid chewing on the side of your mouth where the procedure was performed. This also allows any restorative material to properly set.
Antibiotics should be taken to treat any remaining infection. If the areas around the treatment site suddenly become more painful, you experience tenderness or an unexpected reaction to the medications you should speak to your Puyallup Root Canal Dentist as soon as possible. The same applies if the filling dislodges.
Avoiding hot and cold drinks and food will help minimise discomfort and after a few short days, your teeth should feel completely normal. A good oral hygiene routine will ensure your filling lasts for a long time.
Scaling and Root Planing
Scaling and root planning will leave gums slightly uncomfortable and possibly a little irritated for a few days. Rinsing your mouth with a solution of 1tsp salt to 8oz water two or three times per day will keep the area clean and will relieve any pain.
It is ok to brush and floss as normal but this should be done gently. If any swelling or stiffness around the gums occurs, a cold compress placed on the area will help. A gentle pain medication can be used if the area is really uncomfortable.
Hard, sticky and chewy foods should be avoided for two to three days in order to allow the area to heal properly.
